MARCIUS EXTAVOUR

Dr. Marcius Extavour is a tech executive, storyteller, scientist, and engineer who uses technology innovation and media to solve wicked problems, including climate change and the energy transition. He is a builder and leader with deep expertise spanning exponential technologies, shepherding ideas from the lab to the market, and organizational change and culture. He is also a dynamic and in-demand speaker with a passion for education and learning. His career has spanned roles in private, public, and nonprofit sectors including XPRIZE Foundation, TIME Inc., and the US Senate. In 2019 Extavour was named a 2019 VERGE Vanguard Fellow as one of 20 dreamers, pioneers, entrepreneurs and others leading the clean economy; in 2010, awarded a Congressional Science & Technology Policy Fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He earned a PhD in quantum optics and atomic physics from the University of Toronto, where he studied ultra-cold quantum systems with applications to precision measurement, superconductors, quantum information, and quantum computing. Marcius was born and raised in Toronto, and lives in Los Angeles.

CHIEF CLIMATE SOLUTIONS OFFICER

Led a cross-disciplinary team of editors, journalists, and climate subject matter experts to design, build, and launch TIME Climate 100, a new media product profiling leaders taking climate and nature action in business. This project built on top of CO2.com, a climate action platform that allowed users to fund curated portfolios of science-backed climate projects with transparent impact data and a streamlined user experience.

XPRIZE FOUNDATION

CHIEF SCIENTIST, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF CLIMATE & ENERGY

Created projects, designs, and relationships at the intersection of breakthrough tech innovation, venture capital, government policy, and narrative storytelling to inspire and drive inspiring solutions for humanity. Served as member of senior leadership team contributing to overall strategic vision, external partner engagement, management of talent and budgets, including the pandemic shift from all-in-person to 100% remote workplace. As leader of the Climate and Energy portfolio, oversaw the Expert Brain Trust, initiated the $100M XPRIZE for Carbon Removal, and led the $20M NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE - incentive prizes for tangible demonstrations of innovation in greenhouse gas management, and co-founded the Circular Carbon Network.

Worked directly with faculty and senior administrators to raise philanthropic funds for research and teaching programs, and also build and funded joint academic-industry research programs to support the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, and the Institute for Sustainable Energy.

RESERCH ASSOCIATE, SCIENCE & INNOVATION POLICY

Synthesized input of a 15-person expert panel of physicians and medical researchers  into “The Health Effects of Conducted Energy Weapons” (Tasers and stun guns), a 2-year international scientific study for the Government of Canada.

US SENATE COMMITTE ON ENERGY & NATURAL RESOURCES

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY POLICY FELLOW (AAAS / OSA / OPTICA)

Staffed to Chair Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and Democratic members in Senate legislative business. Assembled and led a national stakeholder coalition of scientific, medical,  and industrial gas communities to craft and pass legislation stabilizing global helium gas supply: The Helium Stewardship Act of 2013, signed into law by President Obama in 2013 (PL 113-40). Legislative portfolio: renewable energy technologies (solar PV, wind); critical materials for clean energy; distributed generation, smart-grids; U.S. energy tax policy; Canadian oil sands. 

ONTARIO POWER GENERATION

QUANTITATIVE RISK ANALYST

Built new tool to estimate risk of cost and schedule overruns for $1.3 billion hydroelectric capital project. Quantified market risk exposure of $250 million corporate electricity trading portfolio. Designed and implemented metrics to rank operational, credit, trading (VAR), currency (FX), and strategic risks.

NORTEL NETWORKS

RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Designed and fabricated III-V semiconductor solar PV devices using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) crystal growth, and VCSEL lasers for 40 Gb/s telecommunications (optical fiber internet) hardware.
